Inverts are all those lovely animals without a backbone. For pet purposes this mostly includes spiders, scorpions, and hermit crabs, but also any bugs. These pets require knowledge and love to care for them properly, and can make great pets for the right person. This is the one group of animals I have never had the privilege of owning, but I have worked with them in zoos. When given the perfect habitat and regular cuddles (by cuddles I mean handling, I would not recommend hugging a tarantula) these animals can thrive and be very low maintenance companions.
Fun invert facts
- The larger the scorpion, the less venomous the sting and the better the temperament. That’s why emperor scorpions are the most common scorpion pet.
- There are 850 species of tarantulas. Females can live up to 30 years and males live to be around 7.
- Tarantulas spin webs, but use them as a burrow, not to catch food.
- Hermit Crabs can lay up to 50,000 eggs at a time, and are only recently breeding in captivity
